Assignment 2

For Students: Lesson on Gas Laws. Produced by high school students at Eagan High School in Eagan, MN.
Describes the three scientific laws that govern gas behavior: Boyles Law, Charles Law and Gay-Lussac's Law. This podcast gives great common sense examples of each law in a way that is easily understandable to high school students. http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?i=16525253&id=117463268&s=143441

For Professional Development: Discusssions on Lab Safety for Teachers.
This podcast is produced by the NSTA and discusses laboratory safety for chemistry teachers. It includes interviews with safety inspectors who describe some amazingly dangerous situations they have encountered during their inspections of various high schools. This podcast is mainly geared toward new teachers but is very relevent to all science teachers who deal with chemicals. This podcast is very informative and, believe it or not, somewhat entertaining. http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?i=46348968&id=266164282&s=143441

Assignment 4

Upon reading the article, it reminded me of the amazing amount of "educational sayings" that I learned in 5th grade and 7th grade. Things like the usual ROYGBIV to Kind People Chew Odor Free Gum Sticks (Kingdom, Phylum, Class,....). These little sayings made it easier to learn. I now have my students do "Adopt an Element" projects that would fit perfectly into using technology from the macbooks. Kids work in groups to put together original skits that highlight the structure, properties, history, uses and current events for randomly chosen elements. It used to be that using a Videocam and VCR was an original idea that they used in their skits. They are now starting to employ various media such as garage band. I look forward to seeing how the macs can add to their projects.

Assignment 8

Reflection on visit with Wes. WOW, this man is inspirational. He is so dedicated to changing the paradigm of schools that I felt exhausted by the time he was done. I must be honest in saying that there is so much information, so many websites, so many pieces of technology that I am feeling overwhelmed. I need to follow his and Alice's advice and try to start "small" with one project and see how it goes. I am the "typical" high school teacher who feels like I am the "expert" for 45 min per day per class. It will take some time for me to relinquish this feeling and incorporate both the available technology and the talent and interests of my students.

Assignment 10

This is a video of the now "famous" Gorham teacher "Survivor Bob" Crowley. He is trying to send a pumpkin into space. If you listen carefully, you'll hear my voice in the background. Note: this demonstration by Mr. Crowley was NOT officially sanctioned by the Gorham School Department!!!!!!

Assignment 11

My project is to have students complete a summary assignment on the topic of lab safety. We currently do Safety Posters, but I'd like to try to have the students incorporate audio and video
into this assignment.
